Vendors, Music & Activities for September 16

Back by popular demand, we’ve got a free cooking demo this week with Andrew Larson, now head chef at Browne’s Tavern. It will take place between 4-6pm.

Andrew is going to be preparing squash bacon fritters and crunchy zucchini canapés using ingredients sourced right from the market. He’ll show you how to shop for the right ingredients and then take you through the recipes step by step. Feel free to bring family and friends along to this fun cooking demonstration and make a group outing of it. We’ll be posting those recipes to our Facebook page during the demo.

While you’re watching the cooking demo, your kids can take part in the free KERNEL activity. Using a leaf, crayon and paper, kids will be making colorful leaf rubbings just in time for autumn. As always, every participant will get $2 in KERNEL Cash for spending on fresh fruit and veggies once they’re done.

Catholic Charities Food for All and Caritas Outreach Ministries will also be doing a Fresh Bucks Spokane tour. All Fresh Bucks-eligible clients will be able to get a personalized tour of the market and have any questions answered.

Plus BECU will be back with their giveaway booth to promote their new Spokane branches. Stop by for lots of free smiles and goodies, then give them a shout out with the #BECULife hashtag to welcome them to the city.

And, finally, Carter Junction will be our musical entertainment this week. Clinton and Sarah unite Clinton’s deep baritone with Sarah’s angelic yet earthy tones to create some beautiful folk and western.

Vendors, Music & Activities for September 9

Nothing like crisp 45° mornings to let you know that autumn is on its way! Our market is just four short Fridays away from the end of its season, which means now’s the time to take advantage of all the local fruit and veg that our vendors are harvesting and making available at some pretty amazing prices.

As the weather cools, baked goods are looking awfully tempting too. Morning Sun Bakery, Sandi’s, The Scone Ranger and Made With Love Bakery have classic pies, scones, breads, quiches, rolls, cookes, biscuits and lots more. And Sister Bees Kitchen has an assortment of lovingly baked granola in mouth-watering flavors like Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip every week.

Today the free KERNEL activity is personalized potato heads. This is a great after-school stop where kids of all ages can build their own spud-based character while you shop. Every child who completes the activity will get $2 in KERNEL Cash for spending on fresh fruit and veggies. Why not some potatoes?

Seely Teriyaki will be heading a few blocks south to join the Chinese Lantern Festival after today’s market, so be sure to grab some of their delicious Asian dishes before they’re gone. You get a huge helping of delicious food for $6 (vegetarian) or $8 (with chicken).

Todd Milne of MilneSounds is back today for a musical hat trick. If you come away from the market feeling incredibly relaxed, it will probably be down to his almost transendental Eastern-inspired jams.

Vendors, Music & Activities for September 2

It’s Labor Day Weekend, which is a great time to squeeze in a summer’s-end barbecue and enjoy the bounty of Washington-grown produce.

So stop in at the market on this cool Friday afternoon and pick up some food for grilling, such as zucchini (yep, it’s delicious when brushed with oil and grilled) or sausages made from locally raised Berkshire pork. There are also peak-season tomatoes, potatoes and early harvest apples for salads or desserts.

For even more locally farmed variety, Catholic Charities Food for All Farm is joining us for the rest of the season starting today.

Emerson-Garfield’s own Bryant McKinley (aka Mr. Spokaloo) will be our musical entertainment. Bryant plays classic hits and makes a single keyboard sound like a five-piece band.

The KERNEL booth is scheduled to be hula hooping into back-to-school season today. They’ll be teaching kids how to hula hoop or letting them show off their skills if they’re already experts. It’s totally free to participate, and kids who complete the activity will get $2 in KERNEL Cash for spending on fresh fruit and veggies from our vendors!

The Emerson-Garfield Neighborhood Council will also be handing out a limited number of dump passes worth $20 each. They’re available to Emerson-Garfield residents and can be used to offset the cost of heavy loads when you’re cleaning out your garage, attic or yard. Come to the market info booth with valid ID to claim yours.

Vendors, Music & Activities for August 26

We’re just a few days away from September, which means that we’re smack dab in the middle of peak harvest season here in Washington State.

Tomato varieties—heirloom, cherry, plum, you name it—in a rainbow of colors are available from many of our vendors, including Song Sparrow, Farm Yard and Berry Basics. Tasty, hearty squashes such as patty pan are available from vendors like Woodard Farms. And if cooking squash is a new experience for you, they gladly provide free recipes and preparation advice. That’s one of the many advantages of a farmers market over a supermarket.

Tomatoes aren’t the only rainbow at today’s market. The free KERNEL activity is called “Eat a Rainbow.” Kids will learn how a colorful plate is often a sign of good nutrition – and then they’ll get $2 in KERNEL cash for spending on fresh fruit and veg to put their new knowledge to the test!

Neighborhood musicians and Spokane Public Radio favorites Jones & Jones are returning to perform this week. Seely Teriyaki is also scheduled to be back with delicious Asian comfort food to eat at the market or take home.

Vendors & Activities for August 19

What’s in store for today’s market? Lots! The Spokane County Master Gardener Program is returning – this time with an informational display on beneficial insects and pollinators. If your home garden isn’t producing like it should, it might be because you aren’t attracting the right bugs! Along with dispensing wisdom on how you can cultivate a green thumb of your own, the master gardeners are planning to hand out some kid-friendly materials on beneficial insects and pollinators.

The Spokane Regional Health District is also scheduled to hold a WIC (FMNP) distribution at today’s market. WIC clients, please come down to the market and sign up for these vouchers that give you cash value toward fresh fruit and veg!

Today’s free KERNEL kids’ activity is “Write Your Own Food Story.” Our KERNEL volunteers will help your kids write an illustrate a fun, food-related story – no matter whether it’s based on real life or drawn from their imagination. As with all KERNEL activities, every child will get $2 in KERNEL cash for spending on our vendors’ fresh fruit and veggies.

The winners of our cookbook raffle for Good and Cheap: Eat Well on $4/Day were drawn last week. The following winners who weren’t present at the time of the drawing are asked to pick up their copy at today’s market:

  • Tim MaCurdy
  • Lois Stites
  • Cindy Masterson
  • Diane Brown
  • Shelley Clark

Our musical entertainment (and our backup musical entertainment) ran into some scheduling issues this week, so our band canopy might sit empty. If you’re a singer/songwriter, feel free to come down and perform jam-session style! It’d be a shame to have no background music on such a lovely market day.

Jesus Guerrero has been out in his orchards since early this morning picking certified organic peaches to bring to market. That’s him in the photo above with a truck full of huge, ripe mid-season peaches that will be waiting for you.
